"Both short and long-term measures are being adopted to overcome the power crisis in the country," said the Prime Minister while briefing media men about the decisions taken at the energy conference held under his chairmanship earlier today.
Flanked by four chief ministers as well as Finance Minister Naveed Qamar, PM Gilani said it had been decided that government offices would operate five days a week - a step that would result in saving 700 MW electricity.
He said instead of advancing the clocks by one hour, office timings would be adjusted to minimize use of electricity in summer season.
Markets across the country would be closed at 8 PM except for Saturdays, he added.
The PM told the reporters that immediate steps would be taken to stop country-wide power theft and legislation would also be made to put a curb on pilferage.
Replying to another question, he said although the government inherited the issue of circular debt and the country witnessed a massive increase in gas demand, all out efforts were being made to overcome the power crisis.
The Prime Minister said work was underway on several power generation projects including those of solar, nuclear, wind, hydro electricity besides alternative energy. Talks were also being held with India on import of electricity, he added.
He said the power-related complaints of the province of Punjab would be duly addressed and the government would continue to provide relief to the lifeline consumers.
