Aisam to face Bopanna Friday

MADRID: Aisam Ul-Huq Qureshi will face former partner and good friend Rohan Bopanna on the court for the first time since their split at the end of last season.

Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer saved five match points on their way to beating top seeds and four-time champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 4-6, 6-4, 18-16 in 92 minutes on Thursday evening to advance to the quarter-finals of the ATP Madrid Open.

The duo, who won their first title as a team last week, will now meet 7th seeds Bopanna and Mahesh Bhupathi.

Qureshi and Rojer first had two match point opportunities at 9-7 in the third set super tie-break, then at 12-11 and 16-15 before converting their fifth chance at 17-16. They saved match points at 9-10, 10-11, 12-13, 13-14 and 14-15.

Fifth seeded Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek also reached the last eight. The Australian Open champions beat Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils in straight sets.

Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez upset third seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic 6-4, 6-4 while sixth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau beat Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek 4-6, 7-6(7), 10-7.

Marin Cilic and Marcelo Melo upset No. 8 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner, 7-6(1), 6-3.
