Gayle’s ton in vain as Gladiators win in sixes galore

DHAKA: Chris Gayle’s brilliant century went in vain as Dhaka Gladiators defeated Barisal Burners by 21 runs in a galore of sixes on the fifth day of the Bangladesh Premier League here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a mammoth target of 209, Barisal Burners was looking in sight of winning the match as Gayle was plundering runs but all hopes were vanished when he was out and the team could reach 187-5 in the allotted 20 overs.

Captain Mashrafe Mortaza and allrounder Azhar Ali claimed two wickets each for Dhaka Gladiators.

Gayle played a thunderous innings of 116 runs off only 61 balls with eleven sixes and six fours.

The only other main scorer was Mithun Ali who contributed 38 with a six and a four.

The crowd enjoyed a rain of sixes and as many as 26 sixes were struck by various batsmen in the match.

Earlier, Dhaka Gladiators piled up a huge total of 208 for five with 14 sixes in 20 overs after it won the toss in the tenth match of the tournament.

Azhar Mahmood top scored with an unbeaten 77 off 47 balls. He hit eight fours and three sixes.

Opener Imran Nazir made 58 off 35 balls with five sixes and three fours while Kieron Pollard scored 36 in a brief 15-ball innings which included five sixes. Darren Stevens also hit a six.

For the Burners, Yasir Arafat and Kabir Ali claimed two wickets each.
